Lee Aaron and Honeymoon Suite bring back the spirit of the ’80s

There is a reason Lee Aaron and Honeymoon Suite have remained popular since their heyday in the ’80s — tight song-craft and upbeat shows as a good sized audience at Average Joes heard, July 24. I arrived early on in Lee “Metal Queen” Aaron’s tight set of rock and roll and jazz music.
The diminutive Aaron seamlessly switched between big ’80s rockers and sultry jazz which showcased her massive voice.
She looked 20 years younger than her 53 and sounded outstanding.
I arrived in time to catch the jazzy “Chained to a Fence in Mississippi.”
It was time to go back to the ’80s after that with “ Sex With Love.”
Her band was tight and didn’t miss a note from catchy chorus to hot guitar solo.
She combined jazz with rock on one of her big hits “Some Girls Do,” which ended with a bluesy breakdown.
Some of her other songs also added a little bit of funk. She strapped on her guitar for some of the more rocking jams, including her signature hit “Metal Queen,” which wound down her set and was called back for an encore of “Whatcha Do To My Body.”
Honeymoon Suite followed with their standard fare of big catchy, singalong hits.
It was like stepping back to the ’80s again as the band, with four of five original members blast out the soundtrack to many a hot, sweaty teenaged summer including “Burning In Love,” Feel it Again,” panties removing ballad “What Does It Take” and one of my favourite summer songs “Wave Babies,” which featured frontman Johnny Dee playing the spooky signature riff, for which you could almost feel the waves lapping at your feet.
As they should be for a band playing close to 40 years, the band was super tight.
Lead guitarist Derry Grehan bounced all over the stage and played hot solos. Johnny Dee beamed ear to ear as did the other band members.
